Leon County Government, in its continuous effort to listen for what is most important to those living in our community, will put in place enhanced requirements at new and existing gas stations. These improvements will better accommodate persons with disabilities.
On October 29, the Leon County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved a Refueling Assistance for Those with Disabilities Ordinance that will help those who need additional assistance refueling their vehicles at the gas station. Starting January 29, 2014, gas stations with 10 fueling stations or more will be required to provide two accessible vehicle refueling stations with attendant assistance.
Through citizen input and engagement, Leon County saw an opportunity to better serve the community. The Refueling Assistance Ordinance provides equal access to necessary resources. In addition, Leon County took deliberate action to ensure the ordinance would not overly burden small local gas station owners.
With these new measures, Leon County will exceed the standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act. The refueling system will save time for many disabled drivers. The necessary license plate or decal will be required to take advantage of the enhanced refueling assistance service provided by the new ordinance.
